Did you know that children as young as three years old can join in team games which are beneficial to them? You can start by introducing children to simple puzzles, parachute activities and games like duck duck goose. Children will soon learn that they must work with other children for the game to progress. Being able to be a team player not only benefits children at school but is a valuable skill everyone needs into adulthood.

No matter a child’s age, group work is vital for everyone to know how to participate. Whether it be in school, in work, with family or with friends, people will always have to do things together and build relationships. Teamwork teaches children that they must communicate effectively to others, which develops key social skills. They also learn that they must respect others, be patient and trust fellow team-mates.

Team building may have its problems at first because children are naturally born to be centred around their own wants and needs. Children sometimes struggle to put their own needs aside for someone else’s. At first it is normal for children to find it difficult to share and play with others, but this is all quickly overcome in pre-school years and early school years.
Outdoor team games are the perfect opportunity for children to practice their group work skills. Games like football or basketball where children must obey rules, work as a team and against another team. The children will play all different roles to make the team work better and get a winning result. Usually there is a captain or leader. Learning to follow and lead a team are also two very different and important roles children will get used to. Outdoor team games teach children so many different aspects of group work all at the same time, which is why they are so important.

Here are some great group work ideas:

• Group book reading
• Outdoor sports
• Board games
• Den making
• Construction projects, such as LEGO
